300: Rise Of An Empire

300: Rise Of An Empire [MA15+]

Zack Snyder's take on Frank Miller's 300 in 2007 was arguably one of the most effective visual interpretations of a graphic novel, acting like a richly detailed motion comic. The follow up is based on Miller's book Xerxes and told in similar fashion (expect lots of slow motion). The next chapter of the saga takes the action to the sea-as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Captain America: The Winter Soldier [CTC]

Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.

The Dark Crystal

The most requested classic at The Astor, unseen inĀ theatricalĀ format for many years. A thousand years ago, a magical crystal cracked resulting in the birth of two new races: the evil reptilian Skeksis, and hunchback wizards known as the Mystics. Jen is a young gelfling (elf-like child) who, armed with the shard of the 'Dark Crystal', must journey to a foreign land to do the bidding of the Mystics.

East of Eden [PG]

Cal is frustrated at every turn, from his reaction to the war, to how to get ahead in business and in life, to how to relate to estranged mother.

The Elephant Man

The Elephant Man [M]

A biography of John Merrick, a severely deformed man who, with the help of a sympathetic doctor, moved from freak shows into posh London society. Lynch's first mainstream film, shot in black and white, it presents a startlingly vivid picture of the hypocrisies evident in the social mores of the Victorian era. Moving performance from Hurt in title role.

Gigi [G]

Based on Colette's story of a young Parisian girl trained to become a courtesan to the wealthy Gaston. But he finds out he prefers her to be his wife rather than his mistress. Chevalier is Gaston's roguish uncle, who casts an always admiring eye on the ladies. One of the first MGM movies to be shot on location, this extravaganza features some of the best tributes to the French lifestyle ever filmed.

Fast And Furious

Fast And Furious [M]

After part 1 and 2 stuck to flashy visuals glamorizing the street racing scene, and a complete departure with Part 3 (shifting to Japan, younger characters and sitting, strangely, at the eventual end of the series' continuity), the fourth installment became more about daring high speed robberies. Brian O'Conner now works for the FBI, teaming up reluctantly with Dominic Toretto to bring down a heroin importer.

Labor Day

Labor Day [M]

Depressed single mom Adele and her son Henry offer a wounded, fearsome man a ride. As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story as their options become increasingly limited.
