CINEMA FIASCO presents “XANADU” (1980) There’s no pleasure guiltier than watching a bad movie but it’s a sad thing to do on your own. Thank heavens then for Cinema Fiasco. For eight years these intrepid cinephiles have given movie-goers the opportunity to meet and see bad movies the way they were meant to be seen: with funny people talking about them live in the theatre. Cinema Fiasco is Melbourne’s favourite bad movie comedy commentary show and, while there are those who would argue it’s the only one, it’s indisputably one of the most memorable nights in the cinema you’ll ever have. Your hosts, Geoff Wallis and Janet A. McLeod, are Melbourne’s premiere bad movie buffs and what they don’t know about awful acting, dreadful dialogue and not-so-special special effects isn’t worth knowing. Their appreciation of gratuitous nudity, car explosions and gorilla suits (honed through years of exposure to bottom shelf $1 weekly rentals from their local video store) is second to none; and it’s expertise like this that makes Cinema Fiasco the exceptional cinema-going experience it is. If you haven’t been to Cinema Fiasco before it’s high time you did and there couldn’t be a better cherry popper than the 1980s musical stinker “Xanadu” (Friday May 27 at 8pm). Olivia Newton-John stars as a Greek muse (with an Australian accent) who steps out of a graffiti mural and inspires down-and-out Michael Beck (whose career this effectively wrecked) to build a roller disco nightclub. There are gooey songs, bad fashions and terrible performances galore and, with Janet and Geoff on hand (with their retinue of old jokes, rotten puns and bitchy banter) you’ll be laughing so hard you’ll choke on your choc-ice. “Two hours of almost constant laugh-out-loud hilarity” – Mel: Hot or Not “Wallis and McLeod’s wonderfully eccentric dynamic, combined with some of the worst films ever made, make this a truly unique film-going experience.” – Beat Magazine (IMDB)
