(2011, dir. Drew Goddard, w/ Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz)
Cabin In The Woods gained almost immediate cult status thanks to its troubled road to the big screen. Completed in 2009, but shelved due to MGM's bankruptcy filing, Cabin got a huge push thanks to it being co-written by The Avengers bankable director Josh Whedon. Released in 2012, it redefined the horror notion by bending comedy, slasher and sci-fi genres all into one incredibly satisfying package. Almost from the first frame you know you are in for something of a game changer as a mysterious facility appears to be overseeing a group of all American teenagers (Friday The 13th style) enjoying a drunken weekend in an old cabin. The undead begin to rise and inflict gory horrors on the group, but just as you think you have your head around what's going on, Whedon and Goddard thrust you in another direction like a demented roller coaster. Think Evil Dead by way of the Truman Show meets The Cube and you may be close. An exhilarating and incredibly entertaining ride. AB
