(2012, dir. Drake Doremus, w/ Anton Yelchin, Felicity Jones)
Anna and Jacob seem destined to suffer the bittersweet sting of their own, "like crazy" romance in a world where fairytales don't exist and love can't necessarily conquer all. Instead, it is practicality and red tape that plays dictator; even where the most essential matters of the heart are concerned. Jones and Yelchin's performances are so naturalistic it hurts. You'll need tissues. And whiskey. TJFILM INFO (Astor rating)
(2011, dir. Terence Davies, w/ Rachel Weisz, Tim Hiddleston)
The Deep Blue Sea will start at approximately 3:52pm, and finish at approximately 5:36pm.
Davies' standards are such that he won't complete a project without sufficient funding to realise his true vision. If only all filmmakers had Davies' artistic integrity. The Deep Blue Sea is without question the most beautifully crafted film release of 2012. Intelligent, deeply affecting and with an incredibly sophisticated visual style, Davies' adaptation of Terence Rattigan's stage play is essential viewing and a fine contemporary example of film as art.
