THE ASTOR REVIEW

Robert Mitchum in fine form as the ex-serviceman who does battle with the dons of the Japanese underworld when his best friend’s daughter is kidnapped. Schrader’s script serves up more sagacious Oriental wisdom than is good for suspense, and the weight of cross-cultural compromise appears to have persuaded Pollack to let the story unfold under its own momentum, but there are enough double-crosses to satisfy the most jaded fans of the genre. Great Dave Grusin Jazz score. AJP
