Oliver Tate is a young teen desperate to fall in love, lose his virginity, and to reunite his rapidly drifting apart parents. Attempting to navigate matters of the heart equipped with nothing better than an internal monologue, Oliver is spectacularly submerged in the mire of his own life without so much as a paddle to help him keep his head and his heart above water. Formulaic and true to the genre, Submarine is an Indie 101, coming-of-age flick that is arguably too self-aware and at times a little too twee. TJ
