After the success of Vicky, Christina, Barcelona there was a theoretical cheer among cinephiles as it seemed Woody Allen had finally returned to form. With Midnight in Paris, cinephiles can genuinely pop the cork on that bottle of dusty champagne as Allen proves he hasn’t lost his way and that he can still make sincere, funny, charming romantic comedies. Young engaged couple Gil and Inez are vacationing in Paris off the back of Inez’s parents business trip. Much like most of Allen’s oeuvre, the city itself plays one of the most central characters as she charms our unabashedly American male lead with her hidden world of culture, history and Joie de Vivre.
