An aesthetically beautiful yet quite basic story about a woman battling depression on her wedding night is told against the backdrop of planet Melancholia set to collide with planet Earth. A simple similie for the very Freudian feelings of loss and loneliness that come with manic depression and misplaced affections. Stunningly shot and carefully composed, Melancholia is the most accessible and certainly the tamest of von Trier’s work to date. TJ
